Police revealed the object was a fire extinguisher

An exploding fire extinguisher flew 100 yards in the air and smashed through a bedroom window on Sunday.

Army bomb disposal experts were called to a house in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, when the 12-inch canister crashed through the glass and burnt a hole in a carpet.

The female owner of the house in Saxon Close called the emergency services saying the flying object smelt of cordite.

The army bomb team was unable to establish what the canister was, but investigations by Bedfordshire Police revealed it was a fire extinguisher.

Nobody injured

Police found that about 100 yards away in Clipstone Crescent, a couple who had recently moved in was having a bonfire of rubbish.

It was established that they had unwittingly put the extinguisher on the fire.

A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police said: "Fortunately nobody was injured.

"The couple have been advised about what not to put on a bonfire in the future."
