Leicester fans seem to be backing plans for the club to adopt its original name of Leicester Fosse.

The club is conducting a poll for supporters on their official website and so far 16,000 have registered their vote - with 60% in favour of the change.

The club's new chief operations officer Paul Mace said: "What is delighting us most is the sheer volume of supporters taking an interest in the debate.

"It is remarkable the number of fans who have bothered to vote in such a short space of time and demonstrates the passion in the local community for the club to be successful."

Fans will also have the chance publicly to vent their feelings on the name debate next weekend.

Cards with the two choices on them are to be distributed to the 30,000 fans expected to attend Saturday's home First Division clash with Wimbledon.

At half-time City's liaison officer Alan Birchenall - a former Leicester player - will ask fans to hold up the card showing their preferred choice of name.

A consortium led by former player Gary Lineker took over Leicester City on Thursday.

Incoming chairman Jon Holmes launched a campaign to revert to Leicester Fosse - as the city's original team was known until 1919.
