Bath University applications soar

Applications to study at the University of Bath have risen by just over 8% on 2002 figures, despite the prospect of students ending their courses in debt.

The university received nearly 19,000 applications to study degrees and HNDs by the 15 January deadline.

This is over twice the total undergraduate capacity.

In the UK as a whole, the number of people applying for a higher education place next autumn rose by 1.8%.

Current capacity

Professor Glynis Breakwell, vice-chancellor at Bath, said the reason behind the surge in applicants was the university's "excellent reputation".

"But we do not plan to increase the number of undergraduates admitted next academic year, she added.

"Any expansion will have to wait until after the 70m enhancement of campus facilities is completed"

The current total capacity for undergraduates at the university is 9,000.

By subject, Civil Engineering and Maths saw the biggest rise in applications.
