Waste plant rubbished

The plant would cover 16 acres at Roche
Villagers in mid-Cornwall have warned they will fight revised plans for a 20m waste processing plant near their homes.

Two hundred residents from Roche packed the village hall on Wednesday night to hear details of the project.

The plant, covering 16 acres, would deal with one-third of Cornwall's domestic refuse.

Earlier plans for an incinerator have been scaled down to an energy-from-waste centre.

'Clean technology'

But at the stormy public meeting, there were claims that the small community would be disrupted by heavy lorries transporting waste to the plant, and also by possible emissions from the site.

Mike Brown, from Cornwall County Council's environmental services, said Roche was the best site.

He said: "The process is a very clean technology. The waste is heated, or 'cooked'. There are no flames and no incineration."

But Derek Newman, chairman of Roche Parish Council, said: "It's impossible to have a site like this without some emissions.

"It's on a greenfield site and it should be on a brownfield site.

"Cornwall County Council should look at the other 30 sites that they have dismissed.

"We have an industrial estate in Roche itself that is not full."

County councillors are likely to consider a decision on the project in April.
