Man jailed for strangling partner
Scales of Justice
A Sussex man has been jailed for four years after strangling his mentally disturbed partner because he was unable to cope.

Timothy Bierton, 48, killed Julie Ann Wendel at their home in Darvel Down, Netherfield, after apparently snapping one evening in June 2002, Lewes Crown Court heard.

Bierton, who had a history of mental health problems, strangled 37-year-old Ms Wendell with cable while she was asleep.

He reported what he had done to the emergency services and later turned himself in at Hastings police station.

Depression history

The court heard Bierton had pleaded for help from social services and doctors in the months before the incident.

He said he could no longer cope with caring for his partner, a mother-of-one, who had a history of depression.

Both Bierton and Ms Wendell had been sectioned on occasions in the past.

Bierton admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
