City's 11th bishop sworn in
Bishop Nigel McCulloch
Bishop McCulloch was born in Merseyside
The 11th Bishop of Manchester has been sworn in at the city's Anglican cathedral.

Leading churchmen and women from across England and abroad were attending the ceremony to install the Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch on Saturday.

Bishop McCulloch, walked from St Anne's Church in the city centre to the cathedral at 1030 GMT, with the service starting at 1100 GMT.

Originally born in Merseyside, he has joined the Manchester diocese after serving for 10 years as Bishop of Wakefield.

Crosby roots

Bishop McCulloch succeeds Christopher Mayfield, who retired as the 10th bishop of the city last October.

He was accompanied by the Dobcross Silver Band and children from St Barnabus Church of England School in Openshaw as he walked to the cathedral.

His wife Celia and their two daughters, Liz and Kathleen, also attended the ceremony, as well as the Bishop of Namibia, whose diocese is linked with Manchester.

'Thrilled to return'

Bishop McCulloch, who is Lord High Almoner to the Queen, grew up in Crosby.

Speaking when he was first told of his appointment last August, he said: "I'm thrilled, as a native of the North West, to be coming back."

He served as curate in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire from 1966 to 1970, before becoming chaplain and director of theological studies at Christ's College, Cambridge.

Bishop McCulloch then worked in Norwich, Salisbury and Taunton, before taking up his post in Manchester.
