Plans for a stone-crushing plant have been rejected

Almost 600 residents in a North Yorkshire village have won a fight to halt a waste recycling depot near their homes.

In what has been dubbed the "Planning Battle of Marston Moor" around 50 residents clapped and cheered councillors' decision to reject a new stone crushing plant.

Firm RJ Howard had applied to build the new premises to handle recycled material from civil engineering projects at Marston Moor Airfield at Tockwith.

But after North Yorkshire County Councillors had assessed the impact of noise and dust from the scheme they voted to refuse the application.

Mark Kennett the chairman of Tockwith Parish Council told BBC News Online: "we're very pleased this has been rejected we were very concerned about the prospect of this built."
