Flooding closes the A1

Kingsmead in Shefford disappears under a torrent

The A1 was closed in both directions in Bedfordshire on Friday because of flooding.

The closure at Beeston, just south of Sandy, came as the Environment Agency issued three severe flood warnings in the county on Friday night.

Environmental Agency spokeswoman Susanne Baker said: "We are particularly concerned about the levels of the River Great Ouse between Turvey and Charnbrook and the River Ivel between Blunham and Sandy in Bedfordshire.

"The levels are rising and there is a possible risk to property surrounding these areas.

Over the edge

"Although we have drier weather there could be a possibility of more flooding because it is so saturated and the rivers are so full.

"A little bit of rain might push it over the edge," she said.

The River Flit between Shefford and Biggleswade in Bedfordshire was also the subject of a severe warning, meaning there is an imminent risk to life or property.

The warnings came with homes and gardens under water and roads shut.

In Hertfordshire, police said the eastern part of the county has been badly affected by flooding.

Village access

Access to the villages of Brent Pelham and Aldbury was difficult and drivers were told to avoid the A120 between Bishop's Stortford and the A10 which could be closed.

The River Ash at Much Hadham burst its banks, causing localised flooding.

In the west of the county Bushey Arches in Watford and the neighbouring retail park were closed.

There was also flooding in the Lower High Street.
