Anger over 'ludicrous' compensation offer

Compensation offers put forward after gas supplies were disconnected to businesses in Banbury have been described as 'ludicrous'.

A pipe was fractured by a cable-laying company last week.

It caused traffic problems and shops, factories and pubs were left without supplies.

Businesses are being offered £30 compensation for every 24 hours they were cut off.

Nomination for revamped market square

A £300,000 scheme to improve an Oxfordshire market square has led to it being shortlisted for an award.

Roads around the square in Eynsham were resurfaced and a pedestrian area was created for community events.

The scheme has been shortlisted from more than 1,000 entries for this year's Civic Trust Market Town Award.

Martin Overbury from Oxfordshire County Council helped to design the new square and said he believes the nomination proves it was money well spent.

Fury after dig disturbs graves

Angry relatives have complained to the council after their loved ones' graves were disturbed to make room for new dead bodies.

Lack of space at Witney Cemetery in Oxfordshire forced the council to dig up footpaths to create extra plots.

But families of those buried nearby say their graves have also been touched.

The council has apologised for the disturbance but claims it had no other option. A new graveyard is to be built at Cogges Hill by 2004.
