Brewery road 'failing' to stop traffic
The access road has flooded
An anti-road campaigner has criticised the owners of a brewery for failing to take traffic away from the centre of a market town.
Doreen Tilley is concerned that the access road to the Greene King brewery in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, often floods and is closed. Ms Tilley said this means lorries are forced to use the old entrances to the town. "We always knew it would flood but the brewers claimed it would only be closed for a couple of days each year. 'Great asset' "We're wondering if there's something wrong with it. "Either way, over the past month it has been failing to keep lorries out of the town centre." But Greene King's engineer, Simon Millyard, said that despite closures in the past month the access road was serving its purpose. "We were expecting it to flood. "It's built at the level of the flood plan which was a planning condition. "The vast majority of the time it is taking traffic off the town centre roads and it's been a great asset." The building of the access road was delayed for years by environmental campaigners who camped on the meadows to protest at the plans. |
