Multi-million pound plan for town
Artists impression of St Austell scheme
The regeneration plan includes a four screen cinema
A 40m regeneration plan to breathe new life into a Cornish town has been unveiled.

The scheme, which includes a tiered grass roof for St Austell's Aylmer Square, was unveiled on Thursday and it is hoped demolition work will start in February.

The plans include two new piazzas, shops, pubs, restaurants, office space, a four-screen cinema and a community building.

The scheme will involve the demolition of a number of 1960s buildings bordering Trinity Street and South Street in the town.

Public exhibition

Commenting on the scheme Shirley Polmounter, regeneration portfolio holder at Restormel Borough Council, said: "I'm tremendously excited by these designs.

"They are bold and imaginative while working in harmony with the historical aspects of St Austell.

"I am confident they will breathe new life into the entire town centre."

The scheme will involve the demolition of a number of 1960s buildings bordering Trinity Street and South Street in the town.

The redevelopment is a partnership between the South West Regional Development Agency, Restormel Borough Council and private sector developer David McLean Developments.

People will be able to see the designs for themselves when a public exhibition opens at The Engine House in Alymer Square on 16 December.
