Grieving father criticises doctors
Morgan Leyland
Morgan died at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital
The father of a girl who died from meningitis has called for doctors to be better educated about the disease.

Three-year-old Morgan Leyland died on Thursday morning after being sent home by an emergency doctor who examined her the previous evening.

Her father Robert, of Bolton, Greater Manchester, said she was displaying at least seven symptoms of meningitis.

She died on Thursday morning in the intensive care unit at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury.

My daughter had at least seven symptoms of meningitis

Mr Leyland, of Darcy Lever, said Morgan's symptoms were high temperature, cold feet and hands, stiff joints, sore legs and drowsiness.

He said the doctor told him she had a bug and was sent home with Calpol and painkillers.

But she was admitted to hospital after her parents became worried about her health.

He said: "My daughter had at least seven symptoms of meningitis.

'Tragic circumstances'

"I think all doctors should be educated in recognising them to prevent similar tragedies."

Dr Kevin Snee, Chief Executive of Bolton Primary Care Trust, confirmed tests had revealed Morgan died from meningococcal meningitis.

He added: "Our sympathies go out to the family who have lost a child in these tragic circumstances.

"Advice and information has been provided to the staff and parents at the nursery this child attended."
