Historic canoe plucked from mud

A canoe thought to be about 1,200-years-old is being recovered from a lagoon in Suffolk.

The 16-feet long dugout wooden boat is currently at the Dingle Marshes nature reserve in Dunwich.

The canoe is due to be brought out of the lagoon on Monday.

Once recovered, the boat will be taken to a marine laboratory at Bentwaters, near Woodbridge, where a conservation tank has been constructed to help preserve it.

Stuart Bacon, a marine archaeologist from Suffolk Underwater Studies, said: "You've got to be careful when you've got something this old."

Alan Miller, Suffolk Wildlife Trust's Dingle Marshes field officer, said the canoe was trawled up by Dunwich fisherman Rodney Collet in 1998.

"Marine archaeologist Stuart Bacon immediately transferred it for protection to a lagoon at Dingle Marshes for safekeeping and conservation purposes," he said.
