Women priests celebrate a decade
Women priests
Women priests' appointments were endorsed in 1992
A special service to celebrate 10 years of women priests in the Church of England is taking place in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The celebration, involving the Dioceses of Newcastle and Durham, is being held at the Hatton Gallery, at Newcastle University, on Saturday.

There are now more than 1,000 women deacons in the Church of England, and approximately half the intake at Durham's theological college are women next year.

But even though more women are entering the ministry every year, women priests say there are still structural inequalties within the Anglican Church.

Reverend Caroline Dick, from Durham Diocese, told BBC Radio Newcastle there was still more to be done.

She said: "There is a huge amount to celebrate but there is an awful long way to go as well as well.

"The next big hurdle we still have to face in the Church of England is passing legislation to allow women to become bishops."
