The woman was raped while on holiday in Cancun
A woman from Liverpool has been attacked and raped while on holiday in Mexico by a man posing as a police officer.

The victim said she thought she would be killed by the man.

But when she reported the crime, she said officers in the city of Cancun already knew of the offender, but no warnings had been given to travellers in the region.

A British consular officer who helped her deal with the police on Tuesday is reported to have said her office had also received no information about the attacker.

I feel physically sick about what has happened to me

The woman, who was due to fly back to the UK on Wednesday, said she was held hostage by the man.

She told BBC Radio Merseyside from her hotel room: "He took my money. He had me absolutely scared to death and I thought he was going to kill me.

"He had been posing as a police officer and police knew exactly who he was."

Before she left for the holiday she said she was told that as a woman travelling alone she would be "completely safe".

"I feel physically sick about what has happened to me," she said.

"And I've tried to tell a few other women here about what has happened and they haven't wanted to know, they've just wanted to get on with their holiday.

"Since it happened, I've just felt traumatised here, I've hardly been out of my room."
