Hundreds of gallons of diesel spilled from the train
Environment officials are investigating a diesel spill that forced the evacuation of a train and stranded hundreds of passengers.

The Derby-to-Chesterfield service was halted near Belper in Derbyshire after it leaked 900 gallons of diesel on to the track.

All 250 passengers and crew were led to safety along the railway line on Sunday afternoon.

One passenger reportedly smashed a window to climb out of the train.

The spill, which happened close to the River Derwent, is being investigated by the Environment Agency.

Colin Cheetham, of Derbyshire Fire Service, said: "We have got our environmental unit on site dealing with potential pollution.

"The Enivronment Agency is checking the surrounding ponds and water courses to make sure no diesel gets into those," he said.

Firefighters evacuated the carriages and walked with all the passengers along the track to safety.
