DNA tests identify Milly remains

DNA tests have confirmed that human remains found in Hampshire woodland are those of schoolgirl Amanda Dowler.

Police say the remains are expected to be released to her family soon so they can begin to make funeral arrangements.

Dental records of the 13-year-old, known as Milly, were matched with the remains soon after they were found in woodland in Yateley Heath Forest, near Fleet, Hampshire, last month.

Police are still searching for evidence

Initial tests on DNA taken from a tooth proved inconclusive.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said a second post-mortem examination last Thursday confirmed a cause of death could not be established.

The teenager vanished after meeting school friends in a cafe near her home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on 21 March.

A witness has told detectives that on the same day he saw two men with a schoolgirl 300 yards from the spot where her body was found.

That sighting was about one hour after Milly went missing.

Sex offenders

Police are still searching the wood for evidence and appealing for help in tracing four vehicles, including a white box van, that was seen in the immediate area at the same time.

They say they have discovered most of her remains, but there is still no sign of her clothes, mobile phone or other possessions.

Surrey and Hampshire Police have been questioning known sex offenders in the area.

They are also speaking to regulars at nearby Blackbushe market in the hope some might have witnessed something.
