Baked bean factory shuts
Factory in North Walsham
The canning factory has been open for seven decades
The Norfolk canning factory which makes HP baked beans is closing down after 70 years of operation.

One hundred workers will lose their jobs at HL Foods in North Walsham.

The factory was once the town's main employer, with more than 200 employees.

Bernard Massingham worked at the plant for 36 years, canning baked beans in the winter and fruit in the summer.

'Very sad'

He said the closure has affected employees badly: "It's a shame, a real pity.

"It's been about the town a long time. It's very sad."

HL Foods, based in Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, purchased the plant in the centre of North Walsham from HP in 1996.

The company will move production to other sites.
