Floods mark end to Indian summer
Shaldon
Shaldon's sea wall was damaged by the weather
The South West was battered by strong winds and heavy rain as the UK's Indian summer came to an abrupt end.

More that 50mm of rain fell in west Cornwall over eight hours on Saturday, causing flooding in the St Ives and Penryn areas.

The second leg of the Around Alone yacht race, which was due to start on Sunday from Torbay, was postponed until Monday due to the conditions.

The River Stennack in St Ives overflowed but an Environment Agency spokesman said it was unlikely to cause problems.

High winds in South Devon caused the closure of the sea front at Torquay as 50 mph winds and a high tide meant waves breaking over the land, Devon and Cornwall police said.

The sea wall in Shaldon, Devon, was left with a three-metre hole which undermined Marine Parade, leading to its closure.

Changes in the weather was triggered by low pressure sweeping over England and Wales.

Forecasters say it will start to feel even more wintry in the next week.
