Drug scans for clubbers
Nightclub dancers
Several pubs and clubs have agreed to the scheme
A project using the latest technology to detect illegal drugs has started in pubs and clubs.

Avon and Somerset police are promoting the use of the desktop drug detection equipment across north Somerset.

The detection system scans people, baggage or vehicles for illegal drugs.

Police want pubs and clubs in the area to use the suitcase-shaped equipment to monitor party-goers.

This machine will have a huge deterrent factor and help keep drugs out of our pubs and clubs

Detective Inspector Martyn Triggol

Several have already agreed to use the equipment.

The aim of the scheme is to get pubs and clubs to turn away anyone who refuses to be tested.

The small, sensitive detector is brushed across the palm of a hand, forehead or inside a pocket.

It can pick up microscopic traces of drugs in four seconds.

Detective Inspector Martyn Triggol, from Avon and Somerset police, said: "This machine will have a huge deterrent factor and help keep drugs out of our pubs and clubs."
