10m breast cancer centre planned

Research and prevention "tend to get sidelined"
Plans for a 10m breast cancer prevention centre were being unveiled in Manchester on Wednesday.

The centre will combine training, research and treatment under one roof.

It will also be the base for UK's only Professor of Cancer Prevention.

The centre already has a temporary site at Withington Hospital in Wythenshawe, but the 10m is needed for a permanent home.

Research includes looking into cancer prevention drugs, faulty genes that can cause breast cancer, and diet and lifestyle factors that trigger the disease.

The bid for funding is being led by the breast cancer charity the Genesis Appeal, which believes prevention and early diagnosis may hold the key to eradicating the disease.

Pam Glass is appeals director at the charity.

She told BBC GMR on Wednesday that because the resources of the NHS were stretched, treating patients was given the highest priority.

"So prevention tends to be put slightly to the side, as does research," she said.

"However, this is people's opportunity to actually help to contribute to this to make this happen in Manchester."

Breast cancer kills 13,000 women every year and will affect one in 10 women at some point during their life.
