Police reveal speed camera sites

Officers want people to be aware of the cameras
A list of every speed camera site in the West Midlands has been released by a new road safety partnership in the region.

Drivers will be told the exact location of all 194 cameras in the West Midlands.

The decision to reveal the cameras sites was taken by the newly-formed West Midlands Casualty Reduction Partnership.

The group, which is made up of police, council officers and road safety experts, hope that by releasing the list, the number of accidents on the roads will be reduced.

'Reduce injury'

Chief inspector Steve Glover, of West Midlands Police, said the idea was to raise awareness among drivers and make them more alert to cameras.

"Cameras are there for a reason and that reason is to reduce serious injury and death caused by excessive speed," he said.

"Drivers should slow down not because of cameras, but because it saves lives."

A recent Home Office decision allows the partnership, which officially comes into effect on Tuesday, to keep the revenue from speed camera fines.

The money will be used to ensure that the existing yellow cameras across the region are regularly maintained.

The partnership aims to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury road accidents in the West Midlands by 300 over the next five years.
