Luton airport plans on display
![]() Two options for expansion are under consideration
Plans for the future of Luton airport went on display in Hertfordshire on Friday.
The exhibition in Harpenden showcases the Department for Transport's plans to cater for an increase in passengers from six to 31 million per year over the next 30 years. It is hoped the scheme for expanding the airport will be in place by 2011. The increase in demand at Luton - the UK's seventh busiest airport - has been mainly due to the rapid growth of low-cost airlines. Restricted space One option is to build a new, longer runway to the south of the existing site. The present runway would then be used as a parallel taxiway. The alternative is to realign and lengthen the runway, and build a new taxiway. There are no plans to have more than one runway at the airport due to the severe space restrictions. Experts questioned The exhibition will be at the Harpenden House Hotel on Friday and Saturday from 0800 BST to 2000 BST. Visitors will be able to pick up documents, question experts on the plans, and make their own views known. The plans are part of the Department for Transport's consultation document about the future of airports in the South East and East of England over the next 30 years. A series of exhibitions is being held in the regions concerned to display the plans.
