Fines buy 47 new speed cameras
A speed camera
The new cameras will cost more than 800,000
Dozens of new speed cameras are to be set up on Derbyshire's roads.

The 47 cameras have been paid for by more than 750,000 raised from speeding fines.

The county's Safety Camera Partnership said the priority was safety not making money.

The equipment will be switched on between October and December.

Lives saved

The new cameras will cost 805,000 to install at 18 locations across the county.

They include the A610 at Nottingham Road in Ripley and three main routes through Long Eaton.

Cameras will also cover the A53 and A6 in Buxton and Nottingham Road in Derby.

Fines go to the government but can be claimed back by the Safety Camera Partnership for further speed reduction measures.

Maggie Ward from the partnership says the cameras will help save lives and cut accidents.

Speed plea

She said: "The fact is that if people stuck to the speed limit then we would not make any money.

"But that is not what we are interested in. If people stuck to the speed limit it would help to reduce all the casualties and all the people killed or injured in their area.

"And that's my message, just keep to the speed limit."
