Police search for sex attacker
Murder scene
Ms Godfrey was found by her neighbour
Police are hunting a killer after an elderly woman was sexually assaulted and beaten to death in her own home.

Gladys Godfrey, 87, was found with serious facial injuries by an elderly neighbour at her bungalow in Mansfield, in Nottinghamshire on Sunday morning.

Officers were called to the Ladybrook estate at around 0930 BST.

Ms Godfrey endured physical and sexual abuse

Ms Godfrey, who was housebound and used a walking frame, was last seen by a family friend at about 1940 BST on Saturday.

Police were called to her bungalow shortly after 0900 BST the following morning after an elderly man found her badly injured body.

Detective Chief Superintendent Phil Davies, of Mansfield CID, said there was no sign of a break-in to the house or any belongings having been stolen.

"What is clear is that prior to her death she endured quite severe physical and sexual abuse.

"Any attack on any elderly person is obviously abhorrent but this was a very severe attack."

Ms Godfrey's best friend Joyce Snepsts had been over to her bungalow on Saturday night.

She said her friend had been burgled and attacked a year ago and did not deserve to die in such a horrible way.

"She was brilliant, a good friend. I have known her for 12 years."
