City is fat dog capital
Overweight dog
The survey checked canine health in eight cities
Dogs in Nottingham are the fattest and most unhealthy in the UK according to a new survey.

Vets checking the general health and appearance of dogs in eight cities found those in Nottingham did badly in most categories.

They were found to be the fattest in Britain, with the condition of coats, eyes and paws all giving concern.

Vets recommend exercise and a balanced diet as the best way to keep pets healthy.

Regular checks and correct feeding can drastically improve the health of your dog

Jo Stonehewer, veterinary surgeon

Sponsored by a pet food manufacturer, a team of veterinary nurses travelled the country giving dogs a health 'MOT'.

They marked each dog out of ten for their general health - ranging from the condition of their coat to the sparkle in their eyes.

Nottingham not only had the most overweight dogs but were generally the least healthy.

Long life

Dogs in Coventry were found to be the most healthy.

Veterinary surgeon Jo Stonehewer said: "It is crucial to monitor the health of your cat or dog regularly to identify when treatment may be necessary.

"Regular checks and correct feeding can drastically improve the health of your cat and dog and give you a better chance of a long, happy life with them."
