Investigation into prison disturbance
Swaleside prison in Kent
A senior officer will carry out the internal investigation
An investigation has begun into a disturbance at a Kent prison.

Inmates in one wing of Swaleside Prison on the Isle of Sheppey demanded a helicopter and cash during the incident.

The Prison Service said specialist teams were drafted in to deal with the trouble, which broke out on Wednesday morning.

It is believed the disturbance was stirred up by one inmate who became aggressive while locked in his cell.

There were no injuries to any officers or prisoners and 11 prisoners were transferred out of the prison

Other prisoners refused to return to their cells and made demands for money and a helicopter.

Others wanted transfers out of the prison, a Prison Service spokeswoman said.

"The rest of the prison remained calm," she said.

"A couple of teams specially trained in control and restraint techniques intervened at 1500 BST."

She said the teams negotiated with the prisoners and took some to segregation units forcibly.

She added: "There were no injuries to any officers or prisoners and 11 prisoners were transferred out of the prison."

An internal investigation is be carried out by a senior officer from another prison.
