Legionnaires' sufferers tested
June Miles, 56
Mrs Miles died from heart failure
People recovering from Legionnaire's disease in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, are to have further tests after the death of a woman who had been recovering from the illness.

June Miles, 56, who was making an apparently successful recovery from the illness, died at the weekend.

A post mortem examination revealed she died from heart failure but that pneumonia, the main symptom of Legionnaires' disease, was a secondary factor.

Ian Cumming, chief executive of the Morecambe Bay Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "We are running a series of follow-up clinics on Saturday and have got 100 people coming in.

Four deaths

"They will receive chest X-rays, blood tests, lung function tests, and be interviewed by a doctor.

"If there is anyone who is still unwell, we are hoping we will pick them up with these clinics, and give them the appropriate treatment."

An 88-year-old man and three women aged between 54 and 74 have already died during the outbreak. A further 141 people were infected by the bug.

On Thursday 19 patients were still in hospital - with five in intensive care - but the majority of them were making "good progress".

'Deepest sympathy'

Mr Cumming said he had been "saddened" to hear of Mrs Miles' death.

He said: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with the family and friends of this lady at this terrible time."

Health officials have identified a 30-year-old air-conditioning system at the town's Forum 28 leisure centre as the source of the outbreak.

A council officer has been suspending pending police and Health and Safety Executive investigations.
