Violence erupts at Teesside jail
Prison interior
Fixtures and fittings were destroyed in the violence
Additional staff are being drafted in to a Teesside prison after inmates wrecked their cells.

Inmates at Holme House Prison in Stockton on Tees destroyed fixtures and fittings over a three-day period, ending on Tuesday.

The violence was sparked after inmates were kept in cells longer than usual because of staff sickness.

Prison service bosses have issued two separate warnings to Holme House so far this year about the consequences of overcrowding.

Inmates transferred

Last month more than 150 inmates were involved in a major disturbance which resulted in some staff needing hospital treatment.

The Home Office says about 30 inmates are being transferred to other establishments as repair work is carried out.

Holme House was originally built for 950 inmates, but currently holds almost 1,000.

The prison has also been criticised by the Prison Reform Trust for only allowing inmates out of their cells for five hours a day.

A Prison Service spokeswoman acknowledged problems at Holme House.

She said staff were working with prisoners to see if improvements could be made to the regime.
