Archer stars on bubblegum boards

Chewers can stick used gum on posters of Archer
Disgraced peer Jeffrey Archer is suffering more indignity - this time at the hands of gum chewers in Bournemouth.

The Dorset town's council has implemented an innovative new way of solving its problem of dropped chewing gum.

It erected posters of the former Tory MP - currently residing in an open prison - and other celebrities and politicians for people to stick their used gum on.

Other famous faces to suffer include Prime Minister Tony Blair, Conservative party leader Iain Duncan Smith and television presenter Jeremy Beadle.

Clean up bill

Bournemouth Council said it hoped the scheme would encourage people not to drop their gum on the streets.

It currently has a 30,000-a-year clean-up bill.

Councillor Basil Ratcliffe said it would make "getting rid of gum fun as well as being clean and kind to the environment".

The scheme has been launched in partnership with the company GumTarget.

Its creator Ian Kenyon said he came up with the idea while watching people sticking chewing gum on adverts in the Tube.
