Demands for inquiry over soldier's death
Bielefeld army base playing field
Mr Shipley died during a barrack's open day
The mother of a Cumbrian soldier who died in Germany is calling for an investigation into his death.

Private David Shipley drowned while taking part in games for a garrison's open day at his army unit's base in Bielefeld in June.

Mr Shipley, 20, from Clarence Road, Barrow, was discovered injured on 22 June and later died.

Now his family has claimed that Mr Shipley was a victim of bullying during his time at the Deepcut barracks in Surrey, where police are investigating the deaths of four soldiers.

Brain damage

The Deepcut deaths are being linked to allegations of bullying at the barracks.

Mr Shipley suffered extensive brain damage after he was discovered by colleagues in a paddling pool, which had been during an open day to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

He was on a life support machine before his parents decided to switch it off.

Mr Shipley was a member of 6 Supply Regiment of the Regiment of the Royal Logistics Corp and was employed as a warehouseman.

The Military of Defence said an inquiry was being carried out by its Special Investigations Branch.
