White wine from Black Country
Dudley vineyard
The vineyard is next to an allotment
A council estate vineyard has brought wine-making to the Black Country.

The vineyard at the edge of an allotment in Wrens Nest, Dudley in the West Midlands is expecting to produce up to 70 bottles of white wine when it is harvested in October.

Local residents began planting vines on an area of waste ground last year.

The variety of vine comes from a part of Germany with a similar climate to the West Midlands.

Wine expert Martin Vickers has helped out

Local people have also been helped by Martin Vickers, of Staffordshire's Halfpenny Green Vineyards.

Mr Vickers told the BBC: "People do think that vines can just be planted and left to it, but they do need a lot of attention.

"I came in and tried to help out."

Local resident Frank Hanson, a milkman and vine grower, said early indications are that the wine will have a good taste.
