Cornish hero Rick Rescorla could be awarded America's highest honour - the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Thousands of people have been petitioning through the internet for Mr Rescorla to be given the honour.

The 62-year-old, who was head of security at Morgan Stanley bank, sacrificed his life rescuing people during the World Trade Centre attack on 11 September.

Earlier this month, Mr Rescorla, who was born in Hayle, was posthumously awarded a gold medal in the British Gold Hero Awards.

Now 13,000 people have petitioned online for him to be given the highest civilian award in America.

Recent recipients of the medal include Nelson Mandela and General Colin Powell.

Mr Rescorla was living and working in New York at the time of the terrorist attacks.

He took charge of the evacuation of one of the twin towers and is said to have helped hundreds of people escape.

During the evacuation he sang Cornish folk songs to keep people's spirits up.

Mr Rescorla then refused to leave while others remained inside.

He did the same when a bomb exploded in one of the Twin Towers in 1993.

A street in Hayle has already been named after Mr Rescorla and local people have expressed their desire to have a lasting memorial to him in their town.

Mr Rescorla was born in Hayle but became a US citizen and fought in the Vietnam War.
