Vase sells for 'amazing' price
Chinese vase
The vase was bought in 1985
A Chinese vase bought in an antique shop for 100 by an eagle-eyed pensioner has sold at auction for 100,000.

The unnamed Dorset-based pensioner bought the 250-year-old 15-inch-high blue and gold ornament in an antique shop in 1985.

The man expected it to sell for 2,000, at Bearne's auctioneers of Exeter, Devon.

The seller was in the auction room when the vase, produced during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, was sold in three minutes to an anonymous bidder for 100,000 - after bidding started at 10,000.

'Affluent collectors'

The vase had attracted interest from around the world.

The vase's two S-shaped handles were decorated with bat's heads, which symbolised long life, prosperity and happiness.

Daniel Goddard, director of Bearne's Auctioneers said: "We knew we had something special but everyone was amazed when the hammer finally fell.

"The recent opening up of the Chinese economy means that there are now plenty of newly-affluent collectors on the market for these Oriental pieces."
