Picture Gallery: England joy turns to pain
Fans packed the streets, pubs and schools to watch England's match against Brazil.
Bars were crammed full, workers came to the office early, and the rush hour streets were deserted. Here is a snapshot of their reactions to the 2-1 defeat:

Jubilant fans welcomed an early goal from England's Michael Owen - but it was too soon to be celebrating
Children across the country arrived at school early to watch the quarter-final clash
In Birmingham hundreds of fans queued early to cram into a sports bar
For those unable to get inside, they had to make do with watching the match from the street
Birmingham's normally busy ring road was empty during the match as the city virtually ground to a halt
Gone fishing.....to watch the football in peace
Joy turned to despair in a London bar as Brazil first equalised and then went a goal ahead
As the final whistle blew, there were tears among dejected England fans of all ages
Time for England fans in a Cambridgeshire pub to reflect on their team's performance
