Picture Gallery: England joy turns to pain
Fans packed the streets, pubs and schools to watch England's match against Brazil.

Bars were crammed full, workers came to the office early, and the rush hour streets were deserted.

Here is a snapshot of their reactions to the 2-1 defeat:

Birmingham's normally busy ring road was empty during the match as the city virtually ground to a halt

One fisherman on the River Cam, in Cambridgeshire, decided to watch the game alone

England fans watched in growing disbelief in the Sports Cafe, in London
Joy turned to despair in a London bar as Brazil first equalised and then went a goal ahead

As the final whistle blew, there were tears among dejected England fans of all ages
