Asylum centre plans considered
The former airbase at High Ercall.
Private developers plan to develop the airbase
Plans to build a centre for 750 asylum seekers in Shropshire are being considered by the government.

Private developers have put forward proposals to build the centre at a former airfield at High Ercall, near Shrewsbury.

Residents have already protested about the plans.

But the Home Office said the scheme would be fully evaluated before any decision is made.

Residents oppose the plans
Immigration Minister Beverley Hughes said, in the House of Commons on Tuesday, that the plans were being looked at.

But in a written reply to Shropshire Labour MP Peter Bradley she said the government would not know if it was a serious prospect until a full evaluation had taken place.

The government has already announced plans to build a centre for 750 asylum seekers in neighbouring Worcestershire on the site of a former airbase at Throckmorton.

More than 1,000 people protested against those proposals in a demonstration last month.
