Shoe rapist case reopens
Police tape
The rapes stopped in 1986
Police in South Yorkshire hunting a serial rapist who stole his victims' shoes have reopened their inquiry 16 years after he last struck.

Officers never caught the so-called Rotherham Shoe Rapist, who attacked people between 1983 and 1986.

One of his victims, who does not wish to be identified, will appear on BBC TV's Crimewatch programme to jog peoples' memories.

The man attacked his victims as they made their way home from pubs and clubs in Rotherham, Dalston, Goldthorpe, Swinton and around Hoyland.

Jail theory

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "One theory police are working on is that the rapist may not have struck again because he may have gone to jail after being caught for unconnected offences."

The man would rob and sexually assault the women, who were all bound and gagged.

On three occasions he wore a stocking mask over his face.

An e-fit photograph first published in 1986 will be shown on the programme.
