Axe victim's 'sex kit'
Jan Charlton
Jan Charlton has admitted killing her partner
A businessman who was hacked to death with an axe by his girlfriend kept a "sex kit" in his house, a court heard.

Hotel manageress Lynn Golland, 42, told the court how Danny O'Brien stored black pvc suits, masks and handcuffs at his home.

She said he revealed he wanted to marry her when he saw her the day before he was killed by another lover.

Former escort girl Jan Charlton, 36, denies murdering Mr O'Brien at the house they shared in Midgley, West Yorkshire, on 23 May 2001.

He was found with an axe embedded in his head in his blood-splattered bedroom.

He had been hit at least 20 times and was blindfolded, gagged and wearing handcuffs.

The jury has heard how Miss Golland and Mr O'Brien, 40, visited Chatsworth House in Derbyshire and had sex in the grounds.

She told Leeds Crown Court: "He was going to run away with me for two days and bring me back married, but we didn't have to rush as we had the rest of our lives together.

"He never asked me to marry him, he just told me he was going to do it."

Miss Golland told how Mr O'Brien had kept a "sex kit" in a draw in his house.

It included black pvc suits, handcuffs, stockings, suspenders and a black Zorro mask with no eye-holes.

Magazine advert

She also described how they had placed an advert in a magazine stating they were a "professional active couple... seeking new sexy friends".

Miss Golland told the trial on Tuesday that she met Mr O'Brien at a Manchester nightclub in August 1996.

Ms Charlton has admitted killing Mr O'Brien but says she was provoked and acting in self defence after he threatened her and her four-year-old daughter.

The case continues.
