UK Muslim killed in riots
Parts of Ahmedabad have been laid to waste
The Foreign Office has confirmed the death of a Muslim man from West Yorkshire during the violence in the Indian state of Gujarat.
Mohammed Aswat Nallabhai, 41, from Batley, West Yorkshire, was attacked on Thursday, along with three relatives. Two of the relatives are still missing. A third has been treated in hospital.
The attack happened as Hindu-Muslim violence escalated. Mr Nallabhai's group was travelling in a minibus when they were attacked near Himmatnagar, about 100 miles from Gujarat's biggest city, Ahmadabad. Four members of the Aswat family - all from Batley - were on a social visit to India, travelling from New Delhi to the village of Lajpur in Gujarat state. Two of the men, named as Saeed Dawood and Shakil Dawood, are missing. Consular officials are making efforts to trace them, the Foreign Office said. Second death A third family member, Imran Dawood, 18, also from Batley, has been released from hospital in Bombay after sustaining minor injuries. The minibus driver, who lived in Gujarat, also died in the attack. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said she had no further details about Mr Nallabhai's death. "I can confirm that one British male is dead and another is in hospital," the spokeswoman said. Mob attack "Two people are still missing and we are waiting to hear from our consul in Bombay to see if there is any more information."
Family members say they believe the minibus was attacked by a mob of at least 30-40 people.
One relative told the BBC: "It is a complete tragedy. "It is something which you imagine would not happen to you - until it does happen." At least 250 people have died in attacks on Muslims since a train packed with Hindu activists was attacked by arsonists belonging to Muslim groups. |
