Hospital patients in TB alert
Tuberculosis (TB) usually affects the lungs
Hundreds of patients treated at a hospital in Lancashire have been contacted over possible exposure to tuberculosis (TB).
About 500 patients have received letters from Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospital after a member of staff was diagnosed with the condition. The hospital is refusing to name the person, or which part of the hospital they work in, other than it is a clinical area. Patients are being reassured that the risk to their health is very small. Minimal risk The people who have been contacted are deemed to be most at risk because of their existing medical condition. Consultant microbiologist Peter Wright told BBC Radio Lancashire the risk is still minimal. "It is important that we let people know they have been exposed to a potential risk. "It is our understanding that the risk, even to the most seriously at risk patients, is very, very small indeed." Drug treatment TB, which is an easily treated illness, is airborne and can be spread by coughing, sneezing or spitting. The disease, which usually affects the lungs, can go undetected for several months before the sufferer begins to develop symptoms. The affected member of staff is currently being treated with antibiotics and is responding well. Any concerned patients can call an information line which has been set up by the hospital on 01257 245 923. Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospital is part of the Chorley and South Ribble NHS Trust. |
