Prisoners set van on fire
Map of Winchester area
A prisoner escaped from a van after it was set on fire as it drove along a motorway.

The Group 4 security van carrying six prisoners was hit by the fire just before 1500 GMT on the southbound M3 near Eastleigh, Hampshire.

The van pulled over on to the hard shoulder and a prisoner escaped by running up the embankment towards a nearby retail park, a spokeswoman for Hampshire Police said.

He was arrested minutes later on suspicion of trying to break into a car and the fire was quickly put out.

It is understood they were on their way from Winchester prison to Portsmouth.

Two prisoners have been taken to Eastleigh police station while the others are being held at Southampton central.

A lane of the motorway was closed to allow recovery of the van and the other prisoners were taken to Southampton central police station.
