Scout leader jailed for 10 years
Kevin Pilling
Pilling raped one scout at his own home
A paedophile scout leader who "habitually" raped a young boy in his care and abused a second has been jailed for 10 years.

Kevin Pilling was convicted last month of six counts of rape and one of indecent assault on a scout over a period of four years.

The 50 year-old assistant district commissioner for the movement in Lancaster was also convicted of indecently assaulting a second boy after paying for him to come to a scout camp.

Passing sentence at Preston Crown Court, Judge Edward Slinger said: "These two boys were branded as liars and it was necessary for them to come to court for their truthfulness to be tested."

There is not the slightest sign of remorse on your part for what you did

Judge Edward Slinger
Pilling, a father-of-five, was told he was guilty of "dreadful and depraved" offences for which only a substantial custodial sentence was appropriate.

He stared blankly at the judge as he was sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison and placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.

Members of his family and that of the three boys he abused were in the packed public gallery at Preston Crown Court.

Throughout the two-week trial, they listened as the court was told how Pilling had "habitually" raped one young scout when he gave him lifts home from weekly meetings over a period of two years.

Unaware of allegations

Pilling, a power station worker from Heysham in Lancashire, also abused a second boy while at scout camp in Buckinghamshire.

After three-and-a-half days of deliberations, the jury convicted him of a total of six charges of rape and two accounts of indecent assaults relating to two boys under 16.

He was cleared of two similar charges of indecent assault, one of which related to a third boy.

All three boys were from the same scout troupe but knew nothing of each others' allegations.

During the trial, the jury heard how Pilling had indecently assaulted Boy A since August 1996 before beginning to rape him at his home in 1998.

Raped in car

He also took the boy to a nearby scout camp to give him driving lessons before bundling him onto the back seat and raping him.

In the case of Boy B the Crown claimed Pilling had offered to pay for him to go on scout camp to Buckinghamshire when his parents could not afford the trip.

Pilling was given eight years for each of the counts of rape, and 18 months for the count of indecently assaulting Boy A, to run at the same time.

He was further sentenced to two years in prison, to run consecutively, for the conviction of indecent assault against Boy B.

Protective regulations

Judge Slinger reminded Pilling that he had committed nearly 40 years to the scouting movement and knew full well the dangers - and the regulations - to prevent those in authority abusing young boys in their care.

He added: "There is not the slightest sign of remorse on your part for what you did.

"You have lost a substantial discount available to those who show proper remorse."
