DNA tests negative over mother, 12
Pregnant woman
South Yorkshire has a high teenage pregnancy rate
DNA tests carried out on five men after a 12-year-old girl from Rotherham became pregnant have all proved negative.

Two of the five men, who were aged 16 at the time, have admitted having sex with the girl, but the Crown Prosecution Service has decided not to press rape charges despite the girl's age.

The two men are to be cautioned by the police and placed on the sex offenders register for two-and-a-half years.

The three other men, aged between 17 and 26, will not face any further police action.

Baby daughter

The police say their investigation is over unless the girl decides to disclose further information.

The girl, who is now 13, gave birth to a daughter in October and is being supported by social services staff.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police: "We are not pursuing further inquiries.

"The girl admitted having sex with five men when she was 12-years-old.

"She has told us she will not make further disclosures at present about who might be the father."

A spokesman for Rotherham Council confirmed the girl was being helped to care for her child.

He said: "We are working with social services, health and education to support the girl within her family."

Young pregnancies

South Yorkshire has some of the highest rates for young pregnancies in the country.

In 1999 a 12-year-old girl gave birth in the bathroom of the family home in Rotherham, having conceived at the age of 11.

A 25-year-old man was later jailed for having unlawful sexual intercourse.

Also in 1999, a 12-year-old girl became pregnant by her 14-year-old boyfriend in Sheffield but the Crown Prosecution Service ruled a prosecution would not be in the public interest.
