Police are questioning a man after two 13-year-old boys died when they were trapped in a car which plunged into the River Severn.

Police said a local man in his 30s, who escaped from the car after it went in the river and raised the alarm, was in custody.

The incident happened near Sydney Avenue, in the Castlefields area of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, at about 0100 GMT on Saturday.

Crews from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service winched the vehicle to the riverside but the two boys were certified dead at the scene.

West Mercia Police have named one of the victims as Michael Pritchard, who lived nearby.

Details of the second boy have not yet been released at the request of his family.

Detective Inspector Pete Holloway appealed for anyone who saw the car, a blue Vauxhall Cavalier, shortly before the accident, to come forward.

On Saturday, the family and close friends of the two teenagers who died placed floral tributes to them at the spot where the car went into the river.

One witness said: "It was just a total accident. I was coming back from seeing someone and saw all fire crews and ambulances rushing down. There were two people stuck in a car, one of them was my son's best friend."
