Cable design wins contest
The winning design entitled The Cable Structure
The winning design was chosen from 200 entrants
The winning design has been chosen in a competition to build a structure for the east Midlands similar to the famous Angel of the North.

Lord Attenborough, who became patron of the scheme at its inception, announced that the winning team was from the University of Nottingham.

Entitled The Cable Structure, the three students have designed a tunnel of cable which lights up at night and will be erected over a section of the M1.

The organisers behind the competition, the Great East Midlands Campaign Group, hope the structure will bring a sense of unity and identity to the region.

Tom Hughes, from the winning team, said: "We couldn't believe it. We really didn't expect to win.

"We came along for the tea and the coffee and to win is fantastic."

Lord Attenborough said: "The feeling that you are welcomed into the East Midlands through this rather beautiful structure is a terrific idea."

More than 700 companies have supported the competition which was conceived in 1999.

The organisers hope the winning structure, which could eventually be renamed, will come to symbolise the east Midlands region and prove as much a part of the scenery as Gateshead's Angel of the North.
