Smashing time with conkers
Players limber up for the World Championships in Northamptonshire
Conkers players smash away in the record attempt
An Irishman hopes to have secured himself a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for smashing conkers.

Eamonn Dooley, from Freshford, County Kilkenny, was taking part in a warm-up event before the World Conker Championships which take place in Northamptonshire on Sunday.

Eight players were trying to smash as many conkers as possible in just one hour.

The event was organised by the Ashton Conker Club, the home of the world championships.

Overseas players

Eamonn managed to smash 306 conkers and is waiting to hear if he has earned himself a place in the prestigious record-breakers bible.

Club secretary John Hadman said eight players took part breaking nearly 1,000 conkers.

"There's no record for breaking conkers in a specific time limit but we are hoping that this will be accepted as a new record by the Guinness Book of Records.

"It was certainly a great event and we'll now decide whether to stage it every year."

More than 350 people are expected to take part in Sunday's world championships, many of them coming to Ashton from overseas.
