Midwives fired after bullying claims
NHS trust: "No harm was done to mothers or babies"
Two midwives at St Mary's Hospital in Portsmouth have been dismissed following allegations of harassment and bullying.
Seven other staff members are also being disciplined. The action follows a major investigation into the hospital's maternity unit after complaints of "persistent, offensive and insulting behaviour". More than 50 members of staff complained and most of those who were bullied or harassed are understood to be students. Mark Smith, chief executive of the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said he was "disappointed that such behaviour existed". Vast majority "It takes real courage to come forward and report bullying because there is always a risk in reporting it, that it will get worse," he said.
He said there was no evidence that any harm had been done to mothers or babies in the hospital's maternity unit. "This is the behaviour of only a few. "It does not reflect on the vast majority of midwives who continue to provide an excellent service under great pressure." The complaints of bullying surfaced during a review of the hospital's services at the beginning of 2001. The dismissals were recommended by a NHS trust disciplinary panel following an internal investigation. The seven staff who were disciplined will either undergo further training or complete a personal development plan. Five of them received written warnings. The NHS trust has set up a helpline for anyone who wants to contact them about bullying and harassment at the hospital.
