How much councils spend on bureaucracy

Councils are spending less on red tape
The table below shows England's local education authorities ranked according to how much they are spending per pupil on core administration, from the most down to the least.

The columns show, from left to right,:

  • what percentage of each authority's Local Schools Budget is being delegated to schools this year
  • the amount delegated, in £ per pupil
  • the amount retained per pupil by the LEA for core administration, including the costs of the chief education officer and the education committee, and various planning and regulatory functions.

Note: There are 150 local education authorities. The figures supplied by the Department for Education exclude the City of London and the Isles of Scilly because they are so small. They are, however, included in the England averages shown in the table.
