As the government unveils its Children's Plan for England, Year 8 pupils in Caedmon School, Whitby, North Yorkshire, were asked what more they would like schools to be doing.
A webpage for each pupil, where pupils can log on and have a chance to talk to someone about any worries they have and have a response by e-mail, but nobody else could view the messages they sent, and if they wanted, parents could also contact by e-mail. This would enable children and parents to have specific advice for their problems.
My ideas for a better school:
1. A chill-out zone where people can hang out with their friends without any distractions.
2. A day off timetable once a month where we can do different activities to learn more about different cultures.
3. Try a range of different sports from different countries for PE and make competitions between schools.
To allow kids to know about local events and events in the school via media. Using a camcorder, software and a mounted TV, people will be able to get information about our town and school. A team could be made to invent the news and edit the results. The media could be put onto a DVD and could run from a DVD player. We could even buy a green screen to make backgrounds behind the presenter. This would raise awareness of events such as our shoe box appeal.
A text message service for outside of school where children can send video message or text if they need help with homework, confidential advice if they are being bullied, or if they just need reassurance. The school would have one phone that one person looks at and no-one would know that you had sent it. Also, parents could contact this phone to find out how their child is doing or if they have any queries. This would help me by knowing that I will always have somewhere to go where I can get confidential advice.
A school trip every year. The pupils should choose where they go. The country must be in an area with a completely different culture. This will enable children to gain cultural awareness and experience life abroad. The government should contribute some money to cut the costs - the school should write a letter to the government saying why they should get the money and how much they need.
It think we could start school earlier because kids would work harder because they would know that they have the afternoon to themselves. This would benefit me because I would have more 'me' time and I could have more time to develop my own interests in and out of school.
