Outstanding secondary schools

The Ofsted annual report for 1999 contains many secondary schools which had outstanding inspection reports during the year.

"In addition, some have excellent GCSE results which they have sustained over a number of years," says the chief inspector, Chris Woodhead.

"Others have GCSE results which are good, given the circumstances of the particular school."

Brookfield Community School, Chesterfield. LEA: Derbyshire

Brookfield emerged from a reorganisation in Chesterfield in 1991 which left it with five sites and staff from 11 different schools - with a sense of mutual distrust.

"So it took quite a while for us to gel," said the headteacher, Liz Thomas, who has been there from the start.

"But since then we've gone from strength to strength."

Mrs Thomas is most proud of the achievements of students at A-level - not top flight, as she puts it, but often doing very well in individual terms having started from a low base - the sort of 'value added' success that eludes official league tables.

"And it raises thousands of pounds every year for charity.

Student council

"There's a very active school council, kids are encouraged to become citizens in the real meaning of the word."

Parents are "excellent - very supportive", she said, not least financially - buying a minibus and refurbishing the school hall and, this year, the library.

"There is quite a resurgence in reading," Mrs Thomas said.

"They are coming into the school now having had literacy hour in primary school and it certainly has a bit more street cred than it did three or four years ago.

"We're targeting boys inevitably because they are not the greatest readers, and we're very pleased with the outcome."

Coincidentally the school was being visited by the National Theatre's touring company as Ofsted's annual report was published, performing As You Like It. Drama is one of the school's strengths.

"I think it's a wonderful place, but then I'm prejudiced," Mrs Thomas said. "I love it."
